The GPO's expertise from its research department at Dollis Hill was invaluable in assisting Bletchley Park to develop robust, electro-mechanical machines which could be used to break the wartime codes. Telephone switching technology, with its logical stepping sequences, formed the basis of many elements of the code-breaking machines.
